Encouraging women to reclaim who they are through a holistic approach to wellness and health.

What's that saying.... "better late than never", r What's that saying.... "better late than never", right?

During springtime, Ireceived my certification as an Integrative Nutrition and Wellness Coach. It's been one-thing-after-another ever since, as our little family navigated loss, homeownership, running a business during a pandemic, job changes, and various events of 2020. I never took the chance to *officially* share the news.
โ €
Anyone that knows me well will tell you I'm not one to shy away from convo around healthy living (which looks different for everyone). The ones that know me REALLY would also tell you I've been overcome a lot since 2014. They're the ones that aren't at all surprised I decided to study holistic health and nutrition, hence receiving this certification.
โ €
All in the name of using my story to help others. That and having a good excuse to talk about healthy living :P.
โ €
This week, I'll be sharing more about what a health coach does and how I intend to use this to serve others, and myself, well.Let's just say I wish I had a dang coach when I wasn't sure how to get off the struggle-bus.
โ €
I've got more (recent) exciting news coming your way. For now, why not make it Instagram-official.
What else do they say? "Pic or it didn't happen!"

Who else feels bad, even guilty, when it comes to Who else feels bad, even guilty, when it comes to setting boundaries? ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿฝ

I used to be Mrs. Apologetic. I could think of a million different things I used to feel bad for NOT doing. I burned myself out by putting everyone before myself 100% of the time. After all, I was taught that's what a good person/good Christian/good wife/good friend/good mom did.

Prioritizing my physical, mental, emotional needs? Nah. I was going to be there and do everything for everyone, even if it cost ME everything.

Then *ish* hit the fan and the rug got pulled from under my feet. My health (in every sense of the word) suffered. I was forced to learn to consider my own needs and learn how to love myself and tend to myself.

That's when I realized I didn't actually know what I needed. I knew how to love others and serve them well, but I couldn't do the same for MYSELF.

I stopped feeling bad for doing what I needed, for setting boundaries and loving myself. Let me tell you- it was a GAME- CHANGER. ๐Ÿ’ฅ

I'm not perfect by any means, but I AM a more joyful mother, loving wife, intentional friend, etc.

The truth is, when you show up for YOURSELF, you can show up even better, with more love and intention, for others. ๐Ÿ’•

What about you, friend? Ever feel bad or selfish for taking time, prioritizing yourself, or even not rushing to respond to every notification?
During the three-ish years I wrestled with a myria During the three-ish years I wrestled with a myriad of health issues and crippling anxiety and overwhelm, I heard these phrases more often than I could count. Whether I told myself or someone else did (including friends, family, or doctors), I was stuck believing it far too long. I was stuck thinking this was my new normal.

What people saw was just a tired, new mom.
What people didn't see was a woman missing out on nourishment in every sense of the word (physical, mental, emotional, even spiritual). They didn't see body trying to find homeostasis and safety. They didnโ€™t see the damaged metabolism, underlying trauma, or shame. They saw what they thought was a normal mom just surviving mom-life.
โ €
Well, just because something's common doesn't make it normal. And self-care is a lot more than getting your nails done... ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿป
โ €
You don't have to trade your joy and entire well-being for having children. Will there be sacrifices? Yes. But you donโ€™t have to give up on YOURSELF and settle for poor quality of life.
โ €
Tired of missing out on motherhood (or life for that matter) because you think it's normal or itโ€™s #momlife?
Let's chat. <3
The Thyroid is the small butterfly shaped gland lo The Thyroid is the small butterfly shaped gland located at the base of your neck that controls the metabolic processes of the body. It plays a major role in growth and development, regulating many body functions by releasing a steady amount of thyroid hormones into the bloodstream.
โ €
If you were to ask Encocrinoligist Dr. Broda Barnes, he'd say 40% + of the population lacks optimal thyroid function. In large part, we have poor quality foods and high stress lifestyles to thank for that. Many are walking around with sub-optimal rhyroid function and don't even know it. Women in particular tend to experience sub-optimal thyroid function and not be aware of it.
โ €
Untreated thyroid conditions during pregnancy, postpartum, and in general, can lead to serious problems. Thyroid disease can affect your mood and cause/contribute to anxiety or depression and overall quality of life.
โ €
A few signs your thyroid might need some extra support:
- low basal temp, low pulse rate
-chronically cold hands and feet
- sluggish liver
- digestive issues
-unexplained weight loss/gain
-disrupted sleep/sleep problems
-increased blood pressure
- general mood disorders
โ €
While a FULL thyroid panel is a common way to check for overall thyroid function, there are things you can do to start supporting the thyroid. Now, if you go that route, don't just stop at checking TSH (this is more a pituitary hormone than it is thyroid hormone). Ask your doctor for a FULL panel ( TSH, T4, T3, FT3, FT4, TPO, TGO, and RT3).
โ €
In the meantime, here are some things you can do to start supporting your body:
โ €
๐Ÿ’›Make sure you're getting a variety of available protein. Peronal favorites are adding things like collagen added to smoothies/drinks, gelatin, bone broth, and raw milk.
๐Ÿ’›Eat enough (even if that means eating small balanced every 4-6 hours)
๐Ÿ’›Support the liver. It not only detoxifies the body but also converts inactive thyroid hormone into active thyroid hormone. Avoid excess alcohol and instead consume more liver-lovin' foods (like beets).
Real talk: I used to think my menstrual cycle was Real talk: I used to think my menstrual cycle was the same thing as my period. The more women (and men) I've spoken with about this topic (no shame), the more I realized I wasn't the only one.
โ €
Your period is just one of four phases of your menstrual cycle (your period). Your menstrual cycle is the whole hormonal process you move through during the month-ish long cycle.
โ €
Many women don't have a great relationship with their cycle (yet!). I can relate. I used to hate when my period came around and I always felt like I was up-and-down with good and bad days. I never considered that my cycle could impact my mood, cognition, cravings, energy, focus, and more.
โ €
Humans are cyclical being, women especially. ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐ŸปWe have different physical, mental, emotional, needs throughout the different phases of our mensural cycle. Instead of fighting against the body's natural flow, we can embrace it and even use it to develop a greater awareness.
โ €
Knowing the fundamentals of your cycle can empower you to optimize your energy, workouts, motivation, sex life, as well as use it to manage stress and overwhelm with more grace.๐Ÿ‘Œ
โ €
Once of the ways I best manage anxiety, overwhelm, as well as my overall well being, is by bring mindful of where I'm at in my cycle.
โ €
Think of your cycle as a seasonal calendar; each phase being an inner season. There's more to it, but go ahead and take a look at the slides for a crash course. ๐Ÿ’•
โ €
Do you track your cycle?
If youโ€™re already on it, at which point in your cycle do you feel your best?

Health is multi-faceted, but I wanted to share 3 M Health is multi-faceted, but I wanted to share 3 MUST-KNOWS for my ladies:

๐Ÿ’›1. What works for one person doesn't always work for another. More specifically, in terms of health, females have historically been excluded from toxicology or biomedical research. Despite progress in more recent years, there remains a gender gap/bias in many approaches to diet, lifestyle, and wellness as a whole.
โ €
Ladies, we are not smaller versions of men! It's important to keep this in mind as we learn what works best for our bodies. We have different needs, especially considering the age, stage, and our cycle.
โ €
๐Ÿ’›2. Speaking of cycles...your menstrual cycle will tell you a lot about overall health. Think of it like a personal report card! If you're like me and the only things you were taught in middle-school sex ed was that you will bleed- and to use X,Y,Z when it you do- I call BS. Start learning about your cycle and start taking more control over your health.
โ €
During different phases of the cycle (menstrual, follicular, ovulation, luteal) our needs and wants change (we're talking food, exercise, libido,etc.).
โ €
๐Ÿ’›3. Just like your size does NOT determine your worth, your size doesn't always determine your health. In a culture that practically worships body image, it's important to recognize that skinny does not equal "healthy". Exercising harder and eating less are not the answer. When done in extreme measures, this can actually add more stress to the body.
โ €
Real talk- at my smallest size, I felt the least well physically and mentally. Long term health is more important than short term vanity.

The word SAFE (adjective) means "free from harm or The word SAFE (adjective) means "free from harm or risk". (Thanks Merriam- Webter). The human body craves safety. Safety = survival.
โ €
Someone that feels safe is more capable of focusing less on surviving and more on thriving.
โ €
You know what doesn't feel safe?
An under-nourished body and an anxious mind ๐Ÿง (two things that are interconnected).
โ €
Eating for nourishment is more about your body feeling safe than it is about the size of your waistline. When you serve your body the nutrients it needs to serve YOU, as opposed to dieting in the name of vanity or because you hate the mom-jeans, you'll have a higher chance of supporting your metabolism, balancing hormones, improving mental health, and more.
โ €
When you're not stuck in a constant state of stress (fight-or-flight), the body feels more safe and is more capable to function optimally. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ
โ €
A safe body = fewer cravings, better sleep, satiated appetite, hormone balance, supported metabolism, less stress, even maintaining stable weight without exhaustive measures, and more. In short, you experience better health and FEEL BETTER. ๐Ÿ’›
โ €
A safe mind = less anxiety, more ease, deeper peace, greater ability to be present, and an overall sense of wellbeing. In short, you experience a better quality of life and FEEL BETTER. ๐Ÿ’›
โ €
How can you start making your body feel safe? Here's are a few things you can start implementing right now:
โ €
- Eating less foods that have food labels and more foods without them (think whole foods/quality animals products)
- Eating balanced meals/snacks throughout the day (try every 4-6 hours if needed and don't just have coffee for breakfast)
- Granting forgiveness or release any bitterness (doing inner healing work. This can be just as impactful as addressing physical matters)

Ever feel like you just canโ€™t be present to your Ever feel like you just canโ€™t be present to your kid? This Mama can relate. ๐Ÿคš๐Ÿผ
โ €
Thanks to issues with house projects and schedule changes, my life and house has been turned upside down these last two weeks.
Instead of wrapping up work and getting quality time with my son when he gets home from school, Iโ€™ve been working nonstop on something. House. Coaching. Editing. Myself.
โ €
It hasnโ€™t all been bad but it has all been exhausting. And more than anything, Iโ€™ve missed being present with my son.
โ €
It reminds me of a few years ago, when my health issues got in the way of that presence; when anxiety and crippling mental health stole so much joy from Motherhood. I used to feel distant from my kid and it broke my heart. So this week, feeling a little distant from him was a little triggering.
โ €
But Iโ€™m doing the best I can right now.
And so are you. You CAN and you WILL get to the place of feeling completely and utterly present with your children. Give yourself some grace today, friend.
โ €
Our kids donโ€™t need us to the best best parents or the most perfect parents, but they do need us to be present parents when we can. ๐Ÿ’›
โ €
Itโ€™s hard to see, but one of the affirmations written on those sticky notes is โ€œI am a present and joy-filled motherโ€. And I believe that for you too. ๐Ÿ’›
โ €
Four years ago I was fighting regular anxiety and Four years ago I was fighting regular anxiety and couldn't get to the bottom of it. Even after medication, counseling, and reading every self-help book I could get my hands on, I would still deal with anxiety that seemed to be triggered โ€œrandomlyโ€ and start in my physical body.
โ €
When I started puzzling together the various pieces of my health together, I focused intentionally on nutrition. I started tracking the attacks and recognized some of my physical triggers- one of which was WHAT and WHEN I ate.
โ €
Real talk- Under-eating or waiting too long between meals can trigger anxiety for some. Iโ€™m one of those ๐Ÿ™ƒ.
โ €
Here's what happens--> Blood sugar drops and the body will try to bring it up. It pumps out epinephrine (also known as adrenaline), which is known as a primary โ€œfight or flightโ€ hormone. This tells the liver to make more glucose (blood sugar), among other things. Adrenaline can also cause your heart to race and palms to sweat. It can also make you feel shaky/jittery- similar symptoms of hypoglycemia and also the oh-so-unsettling onset of an anxiety attack.
โ €
If you're already prone to feeling anxious, getting to that hangry, shaky stage could very well tip you over the edge into MORE anxiety. Just something to pay attention to. ๐Ÿ™‚
โ €
๐Ÿ’›Help yourself play the offense against this happening by:
โ €
- Eating balanced meals every 4-6 hours or as needed.
โ €
- Finding a favorite snack to carry and have on hand at all times (you never know). Go for something balanced with protein, carb, and a little healthy fat. I almost always have a piece of fruit and a grass-fed beef stick, jerky, or a snack bar (with protein) in my bag.
โ €
- Oh, and don't forget to hydrate! <3
